The Journey – Dan Winters

Ministries – Costa Rica

Missionary Don Sims worked with Calvary Ministries International in Jacksonville when I went on a trip to Russia. Don contacted me concerning me loaning him money to build a home in Costa Rica or Guatemala. I reluctantly loaned him $40,000. He constructed his new home, lived in it for a period of time, then sold it at a profit according to his plan and repaid me $44,188 on Mar 26, 1993. and I was thankful it all worked out satisfactory. I had helped this missionary in his work in the foreign country and it made me feel good to obey my heart and help a missionary friend.

Carl Richardson telephone me a few days later and invited me to join him as he traveled to Costa Rica for an evangelistic crusade sponsored by Rev Gerald Derstine, a Spirit-filled Mennonite, a gifted Bible teacher. The meeting was the Institute of Ministry in the jungle city of Guapiles, attended by 106 participating pastors, teachers, and evangelist.                        (see Vol. 2, Number 1 of “Priority One” A Carl Richardson World Ministries Publication.)(Teri can scan pictures and add here.)

We arrived there late one evening, Pastor Guerra put us up in a local hotel. Enrique Guerra our jeep driver only spoke Spanish and a little English. The hotel was very noise and no air conditioning. The next morning, we transferred one block up the street to the Holiday Inn and used my frequent flyer mileage points to pay the bill. The next day we took the two-hour drive over the mountains to the coastal town of Guapiles, where the meeting was held. Carl preached a dynamic message on the Shamgar’s Ox goad as recorded in Judges 3:31.

After service that night we began traveling back to our hotel. During the two-hour drive from the coastal area church service to the Hotel in town the three of us were very tired and the mountainous roadway was very dangerous. The local people referred to this road as the “highway of death” because of the many automobile accidents by travelers. The fog was very heavy this night, and I felt it desirable to keep the conversation going as an attempt to keep our driver awake. I testified and talked a lot; mostly about the goodness of God. Suddenly Enrique Guerra began to cry, shake and speak in Spanish. He said it was “a miracle from God.” Carl finally understood him; he was saying his leg was instantly, miraculously healed as we were riding along.  The three of us rejoiced at this blessing for our Lord. As the Holy Spirit moved it was a very humbling experience as each of us witness the wonderful move of His Spirit.

The next day our air flight was delayed a few hours, so we rested in our hotel room number 1117 at the Holiday Inn. Carl had a bad headache. Carl would experience severe headaches from several times a month ever since his doctor performed a spinal treatment about 20 years previously. He asked me to pray for God to ease the pain and give him some relief. I suggested that prior to praying we read some of the scriptures about healing I had copied from the Bible. There in the Hotel room Carl would read a scripture and then I would read another scripture. As we read 25-30 scriptures our faith was increased, and we prayed a simple prayer asking God to heal him. After 30 years Carl continues to witness and testified to others in my presence of how he has not had another of this type headache. He testifies of this miracle of healing God performed upon him. Carl and brother Guerra were both healed on this trip. Isn’t God good?

Carl reconfirmed these healing during a telephone call to me on October 3, 2015 and again in 2019.

November 1986 we traveled to Jamaica and the other islands with Larry Danley and Herb Adkins

Larry Danley pastored a church; he also owned a lithograph business in Winter Haven. Somehow, he outsourced some sales work to a contact in the Jamaica and some of the islands. They owed him a considerable amount of money and could not send dollars; however, they could pay travel expenses. Larry was also providing support for missionary Herb Adkins, from Winter Haven who was doing missionary work in Jamaica. I understand Jimmy Swagger also had some interest in Herb’s work.

Larry invited Mary Nell and Dan on an all-expense paid vacation to the islands. Larry, Jackie joined Herb and Vivian as the six of us visited the Islands of Barbados, Trinidad, and Tobago during the week of Nov 17, 1988. Larry paid the travel expenses with a trade account from his printing business.

Larry Danley preached a sermon to one of the congregations and an elderly man over 90 years of age accepted the Lord. The natives were so friendly and several of the women planted heavy lip stick kisses on the face of Larry. We laughed and had enjoyed the event.

This was a wonderful trip and a great fun time with our friends touring to various island and also sharing the gospel.
